Warren Howard Anderson, 86, Grand Rapids, MN died Sunday morning, June 12, 2011 at his home in Grand Rapids. An informal memorial gathering will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. with the Sharing of Memories at 3:00 on Friday, August 5, 2011 in Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids. Committal and Military Honors will take place at Itasca-Calvary Cemetery. Born July 22, 1924 in Grand Rapids, MN, Warren grew up in Grand Rapids and graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1942. He served as a demolition specialist with Company C in the 504th P.I.R, 82nd Airborne Division during World War II, was captured during the Battle of Rhineland in January, 1945 and ended his service as a POW, liberated from Stalag XIIA in Bad Orb, Germany on April 2, 1945. After the war, he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota and his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul. He joined his father, Howard, to practice law in Grand Rapids in 1953 and married his best friend, Elvira Spraitz, in 1955. Warren served on many charitable boards in support of the development of his community, including 11 years as a trustee of the Blandin Foundation. He was a member of the Grand Rapids Rotary Club and the Masonic Lodge in Grand Rapids. He enjoyed flying his Grumman Tiger, running 10k races and marathons and skiing citizen races such as the Birkebeiner, the Mora Vasaloppet, and the two-day 100 mile Canadian Ski Marathon at Lachute, Quebec. In his later years he enjoyed riding his bicycle on statewide and nationwide tours. Warren was preceded in death by his father, Howard, his mother, Clara, his wife, "Vera Deara", his brother, Richard, his sister, Clara Jean Rathke and his special friend, Ilo Meyer. He is survived by his sisters, Helen Luyster of Paducah, KY and Janet Brandon of Bovey, sons, Keith (Janet) of Grand Rapids and Douglas of Shakopee, MN, daughter, Marissa (Daniel) Quarberg of Amery, WI and grandchildren, Claire Anderson, Allison Anderson, Marshall Anderson, Jasmine Quarberg and Joseph Quarberg. In honor of Warren's desire to support his community, memorials are preferred to the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation in support of the Hospice Endowment Fund or the Veterans Support Fund.
