Stuart Martin Watson: A Life of Adventure and Devotion

Stuart Martin Watson peacefully entered his heavenly home on Sunday, December 24, 2023, in Grand Rapids, MN. Born in 1928 to Howard and Helen Watson, Stuart's remarkable life exemplified steadfast faith and devoted service, deeply ingrained in the community of his birth.

His educational journey began at Wendigo Grade School, continued through Hillcrest High School, and culminated at Oak Hills Bible Institute. These formative years laid a strong foundation for a life committed to Christ's teachings. Stuart's pastoral work in Clearbrook led him to meet Eleanor Bardwell, a talented church pianist who captured his heart. They wed in 1952 at Grace Chapel in Bagley, MN. This union marked the start of their shared journey in faith, love, and service, during which they raised three children in Grand Rapids.

Known for his tireless work ethic, Stuart dedicated thirty years to the post office, never shying away from long, hard days. He was a man of vision, possessing the means, tools, and tenacity to bring his ideas to fruition. He could often be found in his cluttered & sawdust filled woodshop, sawing wood, tinkering with tools, cutting glass or figuring out how to transform Eleanor's ideas into reality.

An adventurous soul and thrill-seeker, Stuart was an avid pilot and member of the Experimental Aircraft Owners Association. He shared his passion for flying with anyone brave enough to take off from his backyard airstrip. His love for sailing was equally notable, often repeating the phrase, "no guts, no glory."

Stuart's unwavering faith propelled him into various avenues of service. He contributed to building a church in Latvia, supported indigenous communities in Colombia, and later served with Eleanor at the Quiet Place in Longville, MN, and at St. Jude's Children's Orphanage in Las Vegas, NV.

Predeceased by Eleanor Watson, Stuart is lovingly remembered by his second wife and dearest friend, Carol Roberts; his three children, Dennis Watson (Joanne), Terry Watson (Sheryl), and Kay Horsmann (Barry); eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Stuart's memory will forever inspire and uplift those who knew him, a testament to a life devoted to faith, creativity, and adventure.

Visitation will be Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at 10:00 am at Grand Rapid Alliance Church, Grand Rapids, MN followed by the 11:00 am funeral service. Burial will be at Harris Cemetery, Grand Rapids, MN.
