Obituary

Roger Donald Lopez, 91, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Grand Itasca Hospital. He was the middle child, born April 5, 1924 in Tampico, Mexico to Poises and Anna (Gettings) Lopez. He attended grade school and high school in San Antonio, TX where he played basketball and ran track. He was drafted into the US Navy during WWII and served on a submarine in the South Pacific. Roger was wounded during battle and earned a Purple Heart. After the war, he took advantage of the GI Bill and attended Columbia University and Michigan Technological University where he earned degrees in metallurgical engineering. He enjoyed a long and rewarding career with US Steel in MN, where he formed some of his closest friendships. His daughter, Stephanie, son-in-law, Mark Frank and granddaughter, Gretchen, all of Denver, CO, enjoyed Roger's yearly visits during his annual cross-country drives from Grand Rapids to San Diego where he would indulge his passion for golfing. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Kenneth and Mary Ann. Roger is survived by his daughter and her family from Colorado, the Campbell-Lashley family from Minneapolis, MN and many friends and relatives.
