Maxine LaVonne Nix, 93, passed away Friday, January 18, 2013 at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She was born August 24, 1919 in Tekamah, Nebraska to Rono and Inez Bader. At the age of two she was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Edward and Fannie Van Horn. She grew up on a farm in the Scribner/Hooper, Nebraska area and thoroughly enjoyed the out of doors and farming lifestyle. She attended Scribner/Hooper schools and later graduated through correspondence courses. She was married to Albert Kahnk of Nickerson, Nebraska where they lived on a farm. Albert passed away shortly before their son Ray was born. Maxine married Walter Nix of Bovey, Minnesota on May 9, 1959 at Grace Lutheran Church in Hooper, Nebraska. They lived in the Trout Lake area near Bovey until 1997 when they moved to Lakeshore Place apartments in Grand Rapids. Maxine was very active in Salem Lutheran Brethren Church. She at various times taught Sunday School, was Sunday School superintendent, president of the women's missionary fellowship, church organist and pianist as well as many other varied duties. She was preceded in death by husband, Walter Nix, and stepdaughter, Andrea Nix. She is survived by sons, Ray Kahnk of San Diego, CA and Lowell (Cindy) Nix of Cloquet, MN; stepdaughters, Gini (Ron) Strowbridge of Eugene, OR and Elaine (Nate) Robertson of Vancouver, WA; siblings, Willard (Billie) Bader of Loomis, CA, Melba (Ray) Blake of Fremont, NE, Curtis (Ilona) Bader of Jackson Springs, NC, and Gail (Mary Ann) Bader of Omaha, NE; ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
