Lloyd Leroy
Hughes
d. Aug 7, 2016
Lloyd Leroy Hughes, age 88, went to be with his Lord & Savior on August 7, 2016 while a resident at Oak Hill Assisted Living in Grand Rapids. Lloyd was born March 19, 1928 in Alger, Ohio to Harold and Gladys Hughes. Lloyd moved to the Grand Rapids area with his family in 1945 while his father was seeking for good farm land. Lloyd was a 1946 Grand Rapids High School graduate. Lloyd enlisted in the United States Army in 1947. He became a ship's carpenter while in the army, assisting in the repair of small boats during Operation Sandstone. Lloyd married his first wife, Bonita Mae Elsass, in 1949 in Moulton, Ohio. They enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping together. Lloyd and Bonnie did foster care for many years. Following Bonita's death in 1992, Lloyd married Grace Smith in 1994. Lloyd and Grace loved traveling together and visited many areas of the United States. Grace passed away in 2010. Lloyd was employed with U.S. Steel for about 10 years prior to his 28 years of service with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, doing highway maintenance and then retiring in 1990. Lloyd was a "pioneer" of Full Gospel Church, by helping with the construction of the building. He, along with other hard-working men, logged the timber for the lumber and then used the lumber to build the church structure at the present location. The beautiful woodwork in the sanctuary still remains today. Lloyd had many hobbies which included fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, woodworking, feeding birds and traveling; he also enjoyed reading western literature, outdoor/farming magazines and his Bible. He was preceded in death by his wives, Bonita and Grace, his parents, infant sister Laverne, sister Jean Gustafson and stepson Kirby Smith. Lloyd is survived by his two sons, David (Steph Plaziak) of Plymouth, MN, Timothy (Gloria) of Grand Rapids, daughter-in-law, Bonnie L. Hughes of Matthews, NC, step-children Sherry (Leonard) Palkki of Grand Rapids, Terry (Liz) Smith of Bemidji and Linda (of the late Kirby) Smith of Seattle, WA, one sister Carol (Edwin) Lee of Warba, MN, one brother, Darold (Dolores) Hughes of Grand Rapids, MN.
