Kathleen Fay Quiel, age 69, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, September 2, 2011, after a courageous and graceful battle with pancreatic cancer. Visitation is from 1 until the 2 p.m. service on Thursday, September 8, 2011 in the Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids, Rev. Kimbrel Johnson will officiate. Kathleen was born in Grand Rapids to Donald S. and Doris Fay Smith. Kathy attended schools in Grand Rapids, Nevis, and Bemidji. She married Jim Quiel on June 21, 1958. Kathy worked as an elementary teacher's aide and library tech from 1973 to 1988. Kathy and Jim were in business in Grand Rapids since 1961, owning Jim's Auto Repair, Jim's Towing, and Country Kitchen. They retired in 1990 and spent time traveling by motorcycle and motorhome, with winters in Ft. Myers, Florida and summers in Grand Rapids. She was preceded in death by her brother, Don Smith in 2000; father, Donald S. in 2005; and mother, Doris in 2008. Kathleen is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jim; daughters, Laura (Bob) Hanson, Lynn Clafton, and Lisa (Darin Dethloff) Storm; grandsons, Grant Clafton, William Storm, and Michael Storm; granddaughters, Ashley (Jake) Skelly and Elizabeth Storm; great-granddaughter, Abby Skelly; brothers, Lee (Pam) Smith, Dean (Lynn Lincoln) Smith, and Mark (Laurie) Smith; sisters, Lylas Douglass, LuAnn (Jim) Grover, and Beth (Dave) Palkki; and special friends, Mary Dorholt, Syd Gray, and Lorrain Giles. Visitation is from 1 until the 2 p.m. service on Thursday, September 8, 2011 in the Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids, Rev. Kimbrel Johnson will officiate.
