Kathleen Black, 74, of Grand Rapids, passed away unexpectedly on November 28, 2009. She was born in Cloquet to William and Florence McFarland. She was a 1953 graduate of Grand Rapids High School. On December 4, 1954 Kathy married Donald Black. They lived in New Brighton where she worked at the University of Minnesota until 1968. They lived in Milaca 1973 to 2001 and Kathy worked at the Foley Nursing Home for 17 years. After retiring in 1998 Kathy and Don moved to Grand Rapids. She loved reading, watching NBA basketball, cooking, and home decorating. She was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving family includes her husband, Donald; daughter, Julie Black of Grand Rapids, sister, Judy (George) Stowe of New Brighton; brother, William (Jeanne) McFarland, Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews including Jenny Stowe, Sandy Stowe, Teresa McFarland DeSimone, and Michael McFarland. Visitation: 4-6 p.m. Tuesday in the Libbey Funeral Home. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Wednesday December 2 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Grand Rapids. Burial: Itasca-Calvary Cemetery.
