Joyce B. "Cupie" Carlile, age 76, and James M. Carlile, age 81, residents of Warba, Minnesota since 1956, died in a house fire on May 13, 2011 along with their beloved dog and cat, Atlas and Gretel. Joyce was born in Grand Rapids to Orville and Marion Gibbs. She graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1952. Joyce worked a variety of jobs in Warba including cook at the Warba School, rural postal carrier, and home health aide. She will be remembered for her piano playing, love of flowers, birds, and gardening. James was born in Deer River to George "Dan" and Elsie Carlile. He served in the Navy in the early 1950's. Jim worked a number of years in the Danube mine, and then worked for Minnesota Power, retiring after 27 years of service. He will be remembered for his love of flowers, baseball, and mechanical abilities. He dearly loved listening to Joyce play the piano. James and Joyce were married in Grand Rapids on September 3, 1955. They were both raised on farms and loved the farming life, from running a dairy operation until 1969, and then raising beef cattle until 2008. They enjoyed watching all wildlife including deer and geese. They both had a special place in their hearts for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They will be remembered as kind and caring people willing to help anyone and also always had time for a cup of coffee. They are survived by two daughters, Phyllis (Patrick) Magelky of Argusville, North Dakota, Janice Carlile of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, their son and caregiver, Dan Carlile of Warba; three grandchildren, Amy Linser (Dr. Paul Masheimer), Lori Linser, and Alexander Magelky; and two great-grandchildren, Jocelyn Sutherland and Benjamin Masheimer. Also surviving are James' sister, Dorothy Kulisek of Deer River; Joyce's twin sister, Delores "Tom" (Darold) Hughes of Grand Rapids; cousins, and nieces and nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents. James was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Edith Kaye and Ida Adams. Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday May 17 at the Libbey Funeral Home. Memorial Service: 3:00 p.m. Wednesday May 18 at the Warba Presbyterian Church.
