Obituary

Jim Roger Quiel, 73, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012 at Kylar Glen "Shelter in the Woods" in Grand Rapids MN. Jim was born December 5, 1938 in Hibbing, MN to Bill and Margaret Quiel. He graduated from the Agricultural School (now ICC) in 1957. Jim married Kathleen Smith on June 21, 1958. They were best of friends for 53 years until her death in 2011. Jim owned and operated Jim's Shell, Towing and Auto Repair in Grand Rapids from 1961 to 1991. He also drove ambulance for Northland Ambulance Service for 10 years. In 1984 Jim and Kathleen purchased the Grand Rapids Country Kitchen which they owned and operated until retiring in 1989. Jim was a charter member of the Grand Rapids Optimist Club. During his life he enjoyed big game hunting, duck hunting, motor home traveling and riding his Harley, especially enjoying the yearly trips to Sturgis from 1973 to 2012. Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathy; parents; brothers in law, Don and Lee Smith, Clark Douglas, and Larry Thompson; and two nephews. Jim is survived by three daughters, Laura (Bob) Hansen, Lynn Clafton, and Lisa (Darin Dethloff) Storm; grandchildren, Grant Clafton, Ashley (Jake) Skelly, and Willy Mickey, and Beth Storm; great-granddaughters, Abby and Danica Skelly; one brother, Jack (Rollys) Quiel; one sister, Dorothy Thompson; sisters in law, Lylas Douglass, LuAnn (Jim) Grover, Pam Smith; brothers in law, Dean (Lynn Ludwig) Smith, and Mark (Laurie) Smith; many nieces and nephews, and his Florida "Family."
