Howard Severt Landey, 94, of Grand Rapids, Minnesota passed away at his home on Wednesday July 4, 2012 after a short battle with cancer. Howard was born July 4, 1918 at his parent's home in Morse Township, Itasca County. Howard attended the Heywood School and worked for neighbors farming and in winter logging camps until he entered the army in October 1941. He served in the European Theater of Operation and took part in the D-Day Invasion landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, the Northern France Offensive (the "Break-Out"), the Battle of the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and the Rhineland Offensive, earning him four battle ribbons. He married Donnabelle Henry in 1950 at the First Church of God in Grand Rapids. He cut lumber to build their home in Cass County where they raised their two children. Howard worked for the Minnesota Ore Division of United States Steel until his retirement in 1980. After retiring, he and his wife became volunteer para-missionaries for ten years working construction in various countries including Mexico, Nicaragua, Haiti and others. They also spent their entire lives together taking vacations throughout much of the United States and toured several foreign countries. He also owned and operated Landey Mill and Lumber Co in Cass County where he was known for custom sawing for various customers. He enjoyed constructive time in his wood-shop building furniture, and in his garage working on his Model T, antique engines, and his own creations. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donnabelle Landey; daughter, Donnamae (Doug) Dudar; and son, Arlan (Sena) Landey; grandchildren Erika (Antonio) DeLaRosa, Jamison Landey, Andrew Dudar and Gregory Dudar; one great-grandchild, Landen Samuel DeLaRosa; one brother Rudolph Landey; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lena (Bertram) Landey; two brothers, Charley and Archie Landey and his sister Adeline Hill Foix.
