Harlan Waldemar Hansen was born to Waldemar and Viola (Griese) Hansen in Riceville, Iowa, on October 11, 1942, and passed away at his home in rural Goodland on October 1, 2014, after nearly eight years of enduring Alzheimer's disease. As a young boy, he spent summers working at his uncle's farm and then at various other area farms. As a teenager, he worked at the Riceville Co-op Gas Station after school and on weekends. After high school graduation, he found work in Riceville doing finishing work in new homes before moving on to employment at Oliver Tractor Works in Charles City, Iowa. Harlan joined the National Guard and was assigned to Fort Ord, California, for active training followed by several years of reserve duty. He moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1964 and was employed at Iowa Manufacturing as a welder of paving equipment and became a foreman there. In 1970, he partnered in business at Blackhawk Rental in Waterloo, Iowa, and later worked at John Deere Tractor Works. Following his lifelong desire to farm, he moved to Goodland, MN, and dairy farmed for thirteen years until he went back to school to obtain an insurance and securities license in 1986 working for the Fraternal Order of Foresters. In 1992, he went to work for Beckers Construction in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, followed by employment as a mechanic for Hardrives Construction Company of St. Cloud and Ulland Brothers of Hibbing, retiring in 2007. Harlan loved the outdoors, working with the soil, landscaping with rocks, and gardening. Deer hunting was a favorite hobby, especially with his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, mentoring and teaching the younger generation, and most of all, laughter. He was a member of the Grand Rapids Garden Club and served as a supervisor on the Goodland Town Board. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Lou (Kinney); two daughters, Carla and husband, Don Surma, and Jacolyn and husband, Al Neff; one son, Harlan (Pete) Hansen and wife Angel; and three grandchildren, Nick Surma, Darren Surma, and Josephine Hansen; three brothers, Kenny (Helen) Hansen, Roger (Diane) Hansen, and Ray (Mary) Hansen; five sisters, Gloria (Gene) Russell, Ann Myers, Patty (Brian) Crouch, Sue (Joe) Keeling, and Jean (Durwin) Bakken and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in-law, Gary Myers and Tiny Speer, and an infant son, Brian Richard Hansen. Visitation will be held at the Andrews-Libbey Funeral Home in Grand Rapids on Sunday, October 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. and will resume one hour prior to the funeral service at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church in Nashwauk. The funeral service will be held on Monday, October 6, at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church in Nashwauk at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Goodland following the service.
