Obituary

George Joseph Allen, Jr., 85 of Grand Rapids, MN passed away Friday, March 10, 2017 in his home after a lengthy illness. He was born August 23, 1931 in Grand Rapids, MN to George and Lila (Goodwin) Allen, Sr. He graduated from Grand Rapids High School and is a U.S. Army Veteran having served in Germany in a classified missile program from 1956 to 1959. George married Isabelle Riendeau in Grand Rapids, MN on July 28, 1956. He was employed with Blandin Paper Company for many years until his retirement. George was an avid deer hunter, enjoyed fishing, trapping and especially cutting wood. He spent many hours of dark house fishing with his best friend Arne Jamsa. He was a wood worker where he made many items for other people. George loved his grandchildren; lived life to the fullest and not afraid of work. He was a gardener and grew his own food; and enjoyed baking his own bread. George had a wonderful sense of humor and will be greatly missed by all. He was a member of A.A. and the NRA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabelle Allen in 2005; son, Mark Allen; parents; and a sister, Luverne Matzdorf. George is survived by his daughters, Shelly (Richard) Troumbly of Grand Rapids, MN, Debbie (Lyn) Swarthout of Cohasset, MN; son, Milton Allen of Grand Rapids, MN; brothers, Art Allen, Jim (Kathleen) Allen both of Grand Rapids, MN; sisters, Delores (Carl) Hanson of Grand Rapids, MN, Betty Allen of Snohomish, WA; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Janelle, Alyssa and Rick; and seven great-grandchildren, Jayden, J.D., Joselyn, Sammy, Benjamin, Gracelyn, Gabriel; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 16th, 2017 at Andrews-Libbey Funeral Home & Cremation Services and visitation continuing 12:00 p.m. until the 1:00 p.m. Funeral Service, Friday, March 17th, 2017 at West Cohasset Chapel, 24650 MN-6, Cohasset, MN 55721.
