Elizabeth "Betty"
Redding
d. May 10, 2013
Elizabeth "Betty" Mills Redding died Friday, May 10th, 2013, four days after her 102nd birthday in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She was born in Ely, Minnesota, the only child of Josephine and Anson Oscar Mills. Betty grew up in Ely and graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota after which she taught English and Drama in several small Minnesota schools. It was during the time she spent as a teacher in Hill City that she met Maynard Redding. They were married in 1939 and spent almost 60 years together. Betty loved her family, many friends and her life in Grand Rapids, where she was an active volunteer and participant in too many clubs and organizations to mention ... but most especially P.E.O., A.A.U.W., and Christ Episcopal Church. She would wish for any memorial donations to go to one of those groups. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard in 1999; and sons-in-law Huntley Baldwin and Hiro Umezu. Survivors include daughters, Joan Baldwin of Wilson, Wyoming and Jean Umezu of Minneapolis and Tokyo, Japan, grandchildren, Dana (Jim) Daxner, Hunt (Claire) Baldwin, Ken (Chad) Umezu, Junji (Tracy) Umezu and Keimi Umezu. Also, by the great grandchildren she would love to have known, Jake and Katie Daxner, Joe and Redding Baldwin, and Sophie Umezu. The wonderful staff at Manor House Memory Care cared professionally and lovingly for Betty for eight years. They were there for her every step of the way and as she slipped into dementia. Betty's family, all of whom lived far and wide, will be forever grateful for the quality of care she received. A gathering of friends and family to celebrate and remember Betty Redding's life will be held sometime in the Fall.
