Obituary

Dwight Edgar "Ike" Horton, 83, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family, Thursday, July 30, 2015 in the Garden Court Chateau Assisted Living. He was born August 21, 1931 in Longville, MN to Bill and Maudie Horton. He attended the Longville school and rode "the last horse-drawn school bus in Minnesota." He worked at Camp "€˜O My Dreams, rowing tourists back and forth across the lake. At age 14, he moved to Grand Rapids with his family and graduated Grand Rapids High School and worked setting pins at a local bowling alley. In 1950, Dwight enlisted in the US Army, serving in the 17th Infantry Regiment in Korea. Afterwards he was posted to Germany for six months. Dwight married Dorothy Danson in May 1953 after a long, war-time correspondence suggested by his sister, Betty. During his career, Dwight was a journeyman sheet metal worker and marine master mechanic until his retirement. Dwight was a long-time member of Grace Bible Chapel, serving as Sunday School Teacher (9th grade), Deacon, and Elder. For many years, Dwight spent his time taking care of the family farm/lake property, working on projects in his shop, enjoying his family homestead in Longville, and enthusiastically playing bluegrass music with local friends and other musicians. Dwight is survived by his wife, Dorothy of 61 years, and by his four children, Susan (Robb Olson), Marvin, Jeffrey (Christine), and Lisa. He has six grandchildren, Krista (Tom Clusiau), Cory (Cheryl), Andy (Amanda), Jason (Sarah), Christopher, and DJ, in addition to eight great-grandchildren. Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, August 5, at 4pm at Grace Bible Chapel, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Visitation will be at 3pm, prior to the service. Lunch will follow at the church.
