Douglas G.
Veit
d. Sep 26, 2023
Bovey
Douglas G. Veit, age 80, of Bovey, Minnesota passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at his residence in Trout Lake Township with his wife at his side.
Doug was born in 1943 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, the son of Ellen (Walrack) Berger and George Veit. Doug graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On July 30, 1966, Doug and Barb married at Judson Memorial Baptist Church in South Minneapolis. They moved to Grand Rapids in 1969. Prior to his retirement, Doug worked as a Forest Technician for the Itasca County Land Department. Doug cared most about family and friends and enjoyed bird watching, his hobby farm, canoe and kayak trips and also hiking, walking, and hunting.
He was good at taking others through the woods and opening their minds to the wonders of nature. His nephews, John and Randy, would be challenged to get to their final destination as Doug would stop and educate them on every single item along the way. Anyone who had a walk in the woods with Doug came away enriched in ways they never expected.
Doug was a Community Presbyterian Church elder and deacon, but 3-year-old nursery duty was his favorite. He loved participating in the church youth Boundary Waters canoe trips as well. In addition to volunteering at church Doug enjoyed doing volunteer work for several local nonprofits.
Doug lived with dementia for ten years and died peacefully at home under the loving care of family, close friends, CNAs Rachel and Amber who became family, as well as St. Mary's Hospice - Itasca Team.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 57 years, Barbara; one sister, Leona Peterson; relatives and close friends.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Gene Veit and Michael Berger.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids followed by the 4:00 PM memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Presbyterian Church or St. Mary's hospice—Itasca Team.
