Obituary

Darrel Johnson 64, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2012 in the loving arms of his wife Mary at their home on Snaptail Lake in Bovey, MN. Darrel Roger Johnson was born in Wadena, Minnesota on December 4, 1947 to Gail & Leona Johnson and was raised on a farm near Bluegrass, MN. Darrel graduated from Wadena High School in 1965. He attended Dakota Business College and Brown Institute of Technology and became a radio announcer in various towns in Minnesota and Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. He spent many years playing guitar and singing in bands around the area. On November 27, 1981 he married Mary Lewis and moved to New Mexico, living there until 2010 when they bought a summer home on Snaptail Lake near Bovey and a winter home in Travares, Florida. He was a member of the Blue Knights Motor Cycle Club and as a couple Darrel and Mary traveled extensively across the United States on their Harleys. He was a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for the Sierra County Sheriff's Department in Truth or Consequences, NM and loved his position in law enforcement. He had a passion for fishing, hunting, projects, family and friends. Darrel would tackle any project and never saw anything as an obstacle. Darrel knew he could meet any challenge and learn anything he set his mind to. Darrel's philosophy was that you can beat all the odds and live each day to the fullest, never give up the fight to the end. Love, laugh and enjoy life for it is a precious thing. Darrel will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Mary Johnson, Bovey, MN; parents, Gail & Leona Johnson, Verndale, MN: son, Ben Johnson, East Bethel, MN: stepsons, Robert (Julie) Lewis, Andover, MN, Ronald (Michele) Lewis, Forest Lake, MN; stepdaughter, Debbie Lewis, Princeton, MN; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brother, David (Robin) Johnson, Los Lunas, NM; sisters, Barbara (Bruce) Barth, Park Rapids, MN, Virginia (Bob) Deeds, Bemidji, MN, Gaylene (Don) Kozak, Albuquerque, NM; brother, Harold Johnson, Staples, MN; many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by stepson Richard Lewis and his grandparents. A memorial service will be held at Hope Chapel Church, 18142 County 7, Verndale, MN 56481 on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 11:00am with Pastor Neal Malcore officiating. He will be laid to rest at Arlington Memorial Gardens in Mt Healthy, Ohio. Arrangements being made by Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, MN.
