Barbara J. Hietala, born on August 6, 1935 in Buhl, MN, died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family on June 24, 2012 (aged 76 years) in Grand Rapids, MN. Beloved wife to Arnold Hietala for 56 years; loving mother of six children: Dori, Greg, Jeff, Steve, Jill and Brian; and caring grandmother to eight and great-grandmother of two. Most of Barb's adult life was spent caring for her children in Grand Rapids, Mich. where she and Arnie made a home for 38 years. Born with a gregarious personality, a fondness for games and handcrafts, and was an eager dance partner; Barb enjoyed a rich social life. While raising a family Barb always made time to give back to her community by volunteering at the Salvation Army, her local church, and was at the ready to lend a hand when needed. Later in life she and Arnie built two new homes together, got pleasure from traveling throughout the United States with each other, and lived in Phoenix, AZ where Barb flourished among new friends for five years before returning home to Minnesota in 2008. She was always ready with a laugh and smile; her warm spirit and generosity touched many of us deeply and we will miss her greatly. No services are planned at this time. A memorial service may be planned at a later date.
